ABOUT MARY STEVENS (she/her) |
The first time I encountered an index was in my freshman year in college. I had a vague idea of a topic for a term paper, but didn't know what I wanted to explore. I recall looking up (in the card catalog!) a book on the topic and making my way down to the basement of the library. I pulled the book from the shelf and flipped to the index to see what the book was about. (And this is what an indexer does: captures the "aboutness" of a passage). It wasn't long before my 17-year-old self was sitting on the carpeted floor, surrounded by books, amazed that I could learn so much from just an index. Since then, I have had a fondness for indexes. I look there first when considering buying a book; I return to them again in my favorite books.
